Sean Carroll: Distant time and the hint of a multiverse

At TEDxCaltech, cosmologist Sean Carroll attacks — in an entertaining and thought-provoking tour through the nature of time and the universe — a deceptively simple question: Why does time exist at all? The potential answers point to a surprising view of the nature of the universe, and our place in it.

We had the pleasure of having Sean Carroll as our guest on The Think Atheist Radio Show, on May 1st.

It was a great episode.

There is a LOLcat for every situation in life, no doubt. — Judgement Day → monicks.net

So this morning I tweeted this image. I can’t remember where I stole it from. It was so cute.

So just to gain more time, I think, (although that might have worked backwards for him) Camping changed the accuracy of his prediction, and made it a global event on a time zone by time zone basis — just like Santa on Christmas Eve.

The thing is that by that ‘time zone by time zone’ token, the rapture should have taken place in New Zealand already… and guess what — it didn’t happen……….yet?

So, this LOLcat made me laugh for a solid 10 minutes. I’m still giggling, thought I would share this one with you, too.

So have a laugh, you guys. Who knows, a solar flare could make us go in a blink… funny thing is – best case scenario – we would have like eight minutes to get ready.

Have you been on twitter lately? Search for any of the following hashtags - #May21, #rapture, #judgementday #secondcoming. Mostly you’ll get messages which mock the 21st May ‘calculations’, but occasionally you should stumble upon tweets showing genuine concern. Many people actually believe this…

Win a free signed copy of J. Anderson Thomson's new book! - Think Atheist

Win a free signed copy of J. Anderson Thomson’s new book!
Posted by Think Atheist on May 17, 2011 at 1:04pm in Announcements

Alright, we’re at the point now where we can give you the details of the contest we’re running whereby 3 (three) Think Atheist members will win a signed copy of Dr. J. Anderson Thomson’s new book Why We Believe in God(s): A Concise Guide to the Science of Faith, featuring a foreword by none other than Richard Dawkins!

Here are the details:

1) The contest is open only to Think Atheist members so if you’re reading this and you’re not already a member join now! In order to enter you must have a Twitter account as well. Create one now so that you’re prepared ahead of time for the contest.

2) The contest will be held May 21st- this Saturday- and will run from midnight to midnight Eastern US time (here’s a timezone converter for those in other timezones around the world)

3) You will be entered in to the contest when you take to Twitter between the hours of 12AM Saturday May 21st and 11:59:59PM Saturday May21st to follow the book’s publisher and to tweet a specific phrase. This page will be updated Friday night with links to the publisher’s Twitter account and with the specific phrase that will need to be tweeted. Following the publisher now before the time of the contest will do you no good and may result in your entry not being counted. Wait for us to say “GO!”

4) Each entrant will be assigned a number. At the conclusion of the contest the publisher will randomly draw 3 numbers corresponding to 3 entrants. Those persons will then be contacted in order to first verify their membership with Think Atheist*. Upon verification of their membership with Think Atheist they will be given an email address at which to contact the publisher so that the publisher can get the winner’s mailing address for shipping of the book. Winners must contact the publisher within 24 hours of being notified to be eligible to receive their prize**. All costs of shipping the book will be handled by the publisher, whether the winner is within or without the US.

So there you go everyone! Sign up for TA. Create your Twitter profile. Be ready!

Here’s a video of Dr. Thomson discussing the book.

And here he is discussing the cognitive science behind religious thought at the 2009 American Atheists conference.

*Should any of the chosen entrants not be verified Think Atheist members the publisher will then randomly select another entrant. This will continue until such time as we have 3 verified Think Atheist members as winners. (So, again, if you’re not a member now, JOIN!)

**Should a winner fail to contact the publisher within 24 hours of being notified they will be deemed to have forfeited the prize and another entrant will be randomly drawn. This will continue until we have 3 verified Think Atheist members who respond to claim their prize within 24 hours.

You’re an atheist in my book | Monicks Unleashed

“Is something sacred? Yes, say I with Nietzsche. I could not pray to it, but I can stand in affirmation of its magnificence. The world is sacred. Does that make me an atheist? Certainly, in the obvious sense.  If what you hold sacred is not any kind of person you could pray to, or consider to be an appropriate recipient of gratitude (or anger, when a loved one is senselessly killed), you’re an atheist in my book.”

Ayaan Hirsi Ali - Quote | Monicks Unleashed

“The only position that leaves me with no cognitive dissonance is atheism. It is not a creed. Death is certain, replacing both the siren-song of Paradise and the dread of Hell. Life on this earth, with all its mystery and beauty and pain, is then to be lived far more intensely: we stumble and get up, we are sad, confident, insecure, feel loneliness and joy and live. There is nothing more; I want nothing more.”

Chrome Password Fail

You have probably saved a few passwords here and there while using the Google Chrome browser, but if you really have a look, it seems like there is a major Chrome Password fail in place. Try it, I’ll wait!

Best recommendation without using an external application/software is complete abstinence…of saving passwords.

Selective morality – Tweet of the day

Written by Monicks on May 9, 2011 - 10 Comments
Categories: Atheism, Society (Edit)

What do you think, is it too far fetched to expect that theists realized the absurdity of their beliefs by my pointing out that the same book, which to them is the ultimate morality guide, includes idiotic rules that no one in their sane mind would even consider to carry out?

This is the kind of tweet that only atheists find logical.
